Collier County, Fla – September 10, 2020: The Collier County Supervisor of Elections office has launched their annual High School Voter Registration Challenge this month offering a hybrid program that allows both virtual and in-person presentations and voter registration drives for high school students.

Since its launch in 2013, the High School Voter Registration Challenge has registered and pre-registered thousands of students helping them prepare for future elections.

“We knew we had to be flexible with our partners and teachers in the event of this health crisis. We are excited that many of the schools have been so enthusiastic about civics and ensuring that eligible students have an opportunity to register to vote this year,” – Jennifer J. Edwards, Collier County Supervisor of Elections.

The Supervisor of Elections office allows for in-person presentations, but will mostly be supporting teachers to create lesson plans that include topics such as the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, historical elections including the 2000 Presidential Election and Florida’s role in Bush v. Gore, and lessons on the importance of voting and civic engagement followed by a voter registration drive.

To date, participating schools include Barron Collier High School, Gulf Coast High School, Palmetto Ridge High School, Immokalee High School, Lorenzo Walker Technical School, First Baptist Academy and Community School of Naples. With this new virtual program option, more teachers are taking advantage of the challenge than in years past.

Registered voters must be US citizens and must be at least 18 years old. Students under 18 are encouraged to pre-register to vote as early as the age of 16. Pre-registered voters who turn 18 on or before November 3, will be qualified to vote in the 2020 General Election. The voter registration deadline for the upcoming General Election is October 5, 2020.

The Collier County Supervisor of Elections office continues to strengthen its partnerships with Collier County schools and engage students in the democratic process by providing educational programs, conducting voter registration drives, and participating in other events that familiarize students with voting and the electoral process.
